Galungan and Kuningan Days

Galungan and Kuningan Days

Hindus in Indonesia, especially in Bali, honor a calendar filled with sacred days that carry profound spiritual significance. Among these, Galungan and Kuningan are two of the most celebrated festivals. Held every 210 days according to the Balinese Saka calendar, they mark the eternal victory of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (darkness or evil).

These festivals are more than rituals—they embody the essence of Balinese Hindu life. Galungan and Kuningan are moments to welcome ancestral spirits, strengthen family and community ties, and celebrate the triumph of goodness with gratitude and devotion.

Galungan: The Triumph of Goodness

The word Galungan can be understood as “to come together” or “union,” symbolizing the harmony of spiritual forces within every person. On this sacred day, Hindus believe their ancestors descend to earth, bringing blessings and guidance.

The celebrations begin with Penampahan Galungan, the day before Galungan, dedicated to preparing offerings and rituals that symbolize self-control over negative traits.

In 2025, Galungan will be observed on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, followed by Umanis Galungan on Thursday, April 24, 2025—a day when families gather, visit relatives, and share joy in togetherness.

Kuningan: A Prayer for Prosperity

Ten days later, Hindus celebrate Kuningan, which in 2025 falls on Saturday, May 3, 2025. The name is linked to the word “kuning” (yellow), symbolizing purity, prosperity, and divine light. On this day, prayers are offered to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa and the deities for safety, well-being, and blessings for all.

The eve of Kuningan, Penampahan Kuningan, will take place on Friday, May 2, 2025, when families prepare offerings and decorations to welcome the sacred day.

The Second Cycle in 2025

In addition to the April–May observances, a second cycle of Galungan and Kuningan will be celebrated later in the year. The second Galungan will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, followed by Umanis Galungan on Thursday, November 20, 2025, while the second Kuningan will take place on Saturday, November 29, 2025 before the event which called by Penampahan Kuningan on Friday, November 28, 2025.

Embracing the Spirit of Galungan and Kuningan

Galungan and Kuningan invite reflection on the balance between light and darkness, encourage harmony within, and nurture the bonds of family and community.

As the 2025 celebrations approach, may these sacred festivals bring blessings, protection, and inspiration for deeper spiritual awareness and peace throughout the universe.
